Sylhet, Sept 21 (V7N) – Two men have been sentenced to one year in prison each for illegally extracting sand near the Dholai Bridge in Companyganj Upazila, Sylhet. The convicts are Shafiq Ahmed (40), son of Abdullah from Dakghar village, and Mohammad Quddus (30), son of Babul Mia.
The sentencing occurred during a mobile court operation conducted by the Companyganj Upazila administration under the leadership of Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Robin Mia. The action took place late Friday night, from 1:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m., following reports of unauthorized sand extraction beneath the Dholai Bridge.
During the operation, the two individuals were found extracting sand, claiming it as their private property. They were immediately detained and subsequently sentenced by the mobile court.
UNO Mohammad Robin Mia stated that illegal sand mining not only violates environmental regulations but also threatens local infrastructure. He emphasized that all individuals involved in such activities near the bridge would be held accountable under the law.
