Madaripur, Oct 21 (V7N) – The Madaripur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal has sentenced Md. Sajjad Hossain Khan, an auto-rickshaw driver, to death for the rape and murder of madrasa student Dipti Fakir. In addition, the court imposed a fine of 1 million taka on the convict. The verdict was delivered by Judge Sharif A.M. Reza Zaker on Tuesday afternoon.
Government prosecutor Advocate Sharif Md. Saiful Kabir, present in court during the ruling, stated that after six years of judicial proceedings, the court found Sajjad Hossain guilty and ordered his execution.
According to case documents, on July 13, 2019, the body of an unidentified girl was recovered from an abandoned pond in Purbo Khagdi area of Madaripur town. The following day, Dipti’s father, Mojibur Fakir, identified the body as his 15-year-old daughter.
Mojibur Fakir filed a murder case at Madaripur Sadar Police Station, leading the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-8) to investigate. The investigation revealed that Sajjad Hossain had raped and murdered Dipti. RAB also found that he had previously been sentenced to life imprisonment for child murder in 2011 but had been released.
On July 11, 2019, during heavy rain, Dipti boarded Sajjad Hossain’s auto-rickshaw intending to travel to Chormugoria. With no other passengers, Sajjad forcibly took her to his home, committed the rape, and killed her. He then tied her body with electric wires, placed bricks over it, and dumped it into the pond.
The body surfaced two days later, sparking widespread outrage in the local community, which led to protests, human chains, and demands for swift justice.
Dipti’s father, expressing satisfaction with the verdict, said, “My daughter’s murderer has finally been held accountable under the law. We have received justice through this verdict.” Government prosecutor Sharif Md. Saiful Kabir told reporters, “The court sentenced the sole accused, Sajjad Hossain, to death and imposed a fine of 1 million taka. This was an extremely brutal case of rape and murder, and the court has established justice. We are satisfied with the ruling.”
Dipti Fakir was a tenth-grade student at Shamsunnahar Girls’ Madrasa in Bolar Char and the daughter of Mojibur Fakir from Charnachna village, Madaripur Sadar.
