PABNA, Aug 9 (V7N) — Supporters of the Awami League allegedly snatched a local Jubo League leader from police custody shortly after his arrest in Pabna's Bera upazila on Saturday.
The incident occurred around noon near Kagm a irpara Stadium in the Thana Para area of Bera Model Police Station, according to police and local sources.
The man was identified as Sohel Rana, son of the late Khondakar Aynul Haque of Shambhupur-Kagmair area of Bera municipality. He is reportedly a joint general secretary of Bera municipal Jubo League.
Police said they conducted an operation near the stadium at around 12:00pm after receiving information about Rana's whereabouts. The operation was led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Sohel Rana and Sub-Inspector Rashed.
Police arrested the Jubo League leader, who was wanted under arrest warrants, and began taking him to the police station.
According to police, a group of supporters and activists associated with the banned activities of the Awami League confronted officers on the way. An argument reportedly broke out, followed by a physical altercation.
During the confrontation, a group of local people allegedly took Rana away from police custody and left the area with him.
Bera Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nayan Kumar confirmed the incident and said Rana was wanted under two arrest warrants.
“Police went to the stadium area after receiving information that Sohel Rana was there. Some local people obstructed the officers during the arrest,” the officer said.
He said police were conducting further operations to arrest Rana again.
“Those who obstructed police officers in carrying out their duties will be identified and brought under the law,” the OC said.
Police said an investigation into the incident is under way.
