HABIGANJ, Aug 04 (V7N) — Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized a large consignment of suspected smuggled Indian goods worth an estimated Tk 62 lakh from an abandoned covered van during a special operation in Habiganj district, officials said on Monday.
The operation was carried out in the Surma Tea Garden area of Madhabpur upazila following intelligence about a vehicle transporting contraband goods, according to a statement issued by the 55 Border Guard Bangladesh Battalion.
Acting on the tip-off, a BGB operational team set up a temporary checkpoint along the old Dhaka-Sylhet Highway, about five kilometres from the international border.
At around 10:00 a.m., the suspected smugglers reportedly abandoned the covered van beside the highway and fled after noticing the presence of BGB personnel.
A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a large quantity of Indian-made products, including henna, pani puri (fuchka), KitKat chocolate bars and assorted biscuits. The items had been concealed inside cartons, officials said.
According to BGB, the estimated seizure value of the recovered goods is approximately Tk 62 lakh.
The confiscated items are being handed over to the relevant customs authorities in accordance with legal procedures.
Lieutenant Colonel Md. Tanzilur Rahman, Commanding Officer of the 55 BGB Battalion, said the border force remains committed to preventing cross-border smuggling and ensuring border security.
He added that intelligence-based operations and surveillance along the border would be further strengthened and called on border residents to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies.
