COX'S BAZAR, Aug 9 (V7N) — An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Bangladesh Police was found dead inside a washroom at the Irani Pahar Police Camp in Ukhiya upazila of Cox's Bazar early Saturday.
The deceased was identified as ASI Rubel Hossain, who was serving at the police camp.
Police said the officer had been absent from the camp's roll call on Friday afternoon. Colleagues subsequently searched for him in and around the camp and tried several times to contact him by phone, but received no response.
The following morning, camp cook Sharif went to use the washroom for cooking-related work and found the door locked from inside. After receiving no response despite knocking, he looked through a window and saw Hossain lying motionless inside.
Senior officials were informed, and police from Ukhiya Police Station later arrived at the scene. In the presence of the relevant medical personnel, the steel door was cut open and the officer was recovered dead at around 5:00am.
Police recovered a mobile phone believed to have belonged to the deceased, along with a bathing towel, a torchlight and cigarettes from the scene.
Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman said investigators initially suspect that Hossain may have suffered a stroke while inside the washroom. However, he said the exact cause of death would be established after a post-mortem examination and further legal investigation.
Police said the circumstances surrounding the death are being investigated.
