Rajshahi, Aug 08 (V7N) — A month-long tree plantation and sapling distribution campaign has been launched across all 30 wards of Rajshahi city as part of a nationwide afforestation initiative aimed at expanding urban green spaces.
The programme, titled Project Shikor (Roots), is being organised by the Youth Changemakers Network with support from the Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC). The campaign was formally inaugurated on Friday at the Rajshahi Central Park and Zoo by Rajshahi City Corporation Administrator Md. Mahfuzur Rahman Riton.
Speaking at the inauguration, Riton said the initiative supports the national goal announced by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to plant 250 million trees over the next five years as part of efforts to strengthen environmental sustainability and increase the country's green coverage.
He said the Rajshahi City Corporation is currently implementing its own programme to plant approximately 250,000 saplings across the city. Government agencies, educational institutions and voluntary organisations are also participating in tree plantation activities with RCC's support.
Riton expressed optimism that the combined efforts would make Rajshahi significantly greener over the next two years, contributing to a cleaner, healthier, safer and more environmentally sustainable urban environment.
He also highlighted several government initiatives currently being implemented, including the distribution of family cards and agriculture cards, financial allowances for imams and muezzins, and canal excavation projects. He added that the government is encouraging young people to participate in sports as part of broader efforts to promote healthy lifestyles and combat drug abuse.
Youth Changemakers Network President Didarul Islam, General Secretary Israt Jahan and Vice-President Amit Sarkar attended the event along with other members of the organisation.
Among those present were Rajshahi City Corporation Supervising Engineer Khairul Baker, Executive Engineer Nilufa Yasmin, local political leaders, and representatives from civic organisations and community groups.
The month-long campaign will include tree plantation drives and the distribution of saplings throughout Rajshahi's 30 municipal wards, with organisers aiming to encourage greater public participation in environmental conservation efforts.
