Rangamati Jan 21 (V7N) - Ansuisin Chowdhury, President of the Kaptai Upazila Awami League and former member of the Rangamati Zilla Parishad, was arrested in a raid conducted by Kaptai Police Station. The arrest occurred late Monday (January 21) in the Khulsi Police Station area of Chittagong. Chowdhury is the son of the late Switchahla Marma from Headmanpara in Chitmarom Union, Kaptai Upazila.
The charges against him stem from allegations of inciting chaos, vandalism, and attacks on students during the anti-discrimination movement at the Bangladesh Sweden Polytechnic Institute in Kaptai’s Notun Bazar area.
Officer-in-Charge of Kaptai Police Station, Md. Masud, confirmed the operation was conducted under the directives of Rangamati Police Superintendent Dr. SM Farhad Hossain and Kaptai Circle Additional Police Superintendent Md. Jahedul Islam. Based on secret information, Chowdhury was arrested in Chittagong late at night.
In a related development, Md. Junayet Hossain (25), another accused in the same case, was apprehended at 10 PM on Monday from a house in the Notun Bazar area of Kaptai.
Police reports identify Ansuisin Chowdhury as the primary accused and Junayet Hossain as the second accused in the Anti-Discrimination Students' Movement Case No. 01(11)24. The case was filed by Azmaul Ahmed Tasin, a second-semester Computer Science student at the Bangladesh Sweden Polytechnic Institute.
Both accused were presented to the Rangamati court on Tuesday (January 21). Following the hearing, the court cognizance judge ordered their detention, and they were subsequently sent to jail.
The charges against Chowdhury and Hossain relate to disruptions caused during the anti-discrimination student movement in the area. The movement had gained traction due to demands for equality and against perceived discrimination at the institute.
The arrest of a high-profile political leader like Chowdhury has drawn significant attention, with further investigations expected to provide more clarity on the allegations and events leading up to the case.
