Rangamati, Mar 6 (V7N) - Electricity production at the Karnaphuli Hydropower Station (KHPS) in Kaptai Upazila, Rangamati, has significantly dropped due to a decline in water levels in Kaptai Lake. Out of the five units at the plant, only Unit No. 4 is currently operational, generating just 40 megawatts of electricity.
Despite all five units being in working condition, the power station can only operate one unit due to the water shortage. Under normal circumstances, the plant would generate up to 242 megawatts of electricity.
Speaking on Thursday (March 6), Managing Engineer ATM Abduzzahar confirmed that water levels in Kaptai Lake are steadily decreasing. At present, the lake's water level stands at 88.54 feet below mean sea level (MSL), significantly lower than the required 92.20 feet.
"If there is no sudden rainfall, and the water level continues to drop, even the last operational unit may have to be shut down," he warned, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
