Jhalakathi, Apr 7 (V7N)– A 13-year-old madrasa student, identified as Mahadi, has gone missing after entering a canal to bathe in Jhalakathi on Monday afternoon.
"A madrasa student named Mahadi (13) has gone missing after going to bathe in a canal in Jhalakathi," confirmed Md. Shafiqul Islam, Station Officer of Jhalokati Fire Service.
The incident occurred at approximately 1 PM local time in the Gurudham Canal, located within the city.
"The incident took place at around 1 pm on Monday (April 7) in the city's Gurudham Canal," Officer Shafiqul Islam stated.
Mahadi is the son of A. Rahman and hails from Latimsar village in the Nathullabad area. The family currently resides in a rented home in the Krishna Kathi area of Jhalakathi.
"The missing Mahadi is the son of A. Rahman of Latimsar village in Nathullabad area. They live in a rented house in Krishna Kathi area of Jhalakathi," a local resident confirmed.
Eyewitness accounts from Mahadi's friends indicate that he went to bathe in the Gurudham canal with them around noon. Tragically, at some point, Mahadi went under the water and did not resurface. Despite their efforts to help him, his friends were unable to rescue him and subsequently alerted local residents.
"Eyewitnesses said that Mahadi was a student of a local madrasa. He went to bathe in the Gurudham canal with some friends around noon. At one point, Mahadi drowned in the water. Despite many attempts, his friends could not rescue him. Later, they informed the locals," a witness recounted.
Upon receiving news of the incident, a diving team from the Jhalokati Fire Service was immediately dispatched to the scene and commenced a rescue operation. However, as of the latest reports, no trace of the missing student has been found.
"Fire Service Station Officer Md. Shafiqul Islam also said that upon receiving the information, a diving team of Jhalokati Fire Service reached the spot and started a rescue operation. However, till the last news, no trace of the missing Mahadi was found," Officer Shafiqul Islam reported.
