Bagerhat, Nov 26 (V7N) – A campaign and rally were held in the coastal upazilas of Morelganj and Shyamnagar in Bagerhat to raise awareness and demand the right to safe drinking water. The event was organized by the Srijon Project of the Jagoroni Chakra Foundation on Tuesday at 11 a.m., with the participation of Morelganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Habibullah, numerous community leaders, local administrative officials, NGO representatives, and a large number of local residents.

Participants submitted a memorandum to the UNO urging the government and private organizations to take joint initiatives to ensure access to safe drinking water, which they emphasized as a fundamental daily life right. The rally also included the presence of Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Atish Sarkar, NGO representatives, and other local dignitaries.

In his inaugural speech, Abdul Mannan, Project Manager of the Jagoroni Chakra Foundation, highlighted that groundwater in Morelganj and Shyamnagar is excessively saline, making it unsuitable for daily consumption. Natural hazards such as cyclones, tidal surges, river erosion, and high tides have further damaged the freshwater sources, leaving thousands of people struggling to access safe drinking water every day. Women, children, and marginalized communities are the most affected.

The campaign presented nine key demands for the protection and provision of safe drinking water. During the rally, UNO Habibullah stated, “There is no alternative to safe water for a healthy and normal life. The administration is already taking measures in this regard and will continue to do so in the future.”

Organizers emphasized that such awareness initiatives will continue regularly to improve the quality of life for local communities and ensure the right to safe drinking water remains a priority.
