Mongla, Jan 06 (V7N) - Severe winter has gripped Mongla in the month of Poush, with overcast skies and dense fog prevailing since Monday morning. The coastal region has been enveloped in cold winds throughout the day, causing harsh conditions for residents, especially the underprivileged and homeless.
Stepping in to assist the most vulnerable, Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Sharmin Akter Sumi personally visited several areas to distribute blankets. She ensured that the blankets reached those in urgent need, bringing relief and happiness to people who rarely have access to adequate winter clothing. Local authorities note that government‑allocated winter supplies often fail to reach the poorest due to favoritism among local representatives, making initiatives like UNO Sumi’s crucial.
During the first phase of distribution, over a hundred blankets were handed out to destitute men and women living along the Pashur River, many of whom sustain their livelihoods by fishing, collecting crabs, or raising fingerlings. UNO Sumi emphasized that these people often cannot afford warm clothing, making the blanket distribution vital for their survival. Further distribution phases are planned to reach more families in need.
The blanket distribution event on Monday afternoon was attended by Upazila Project Implementation Officer Md. Matiur Rahman, Upazila Social Services Officer S.M. Masud Rana, Upazila Election Officer Md. Shahriar, and Upazila Fisheries Officer Md. Zahidul Islam. Authorities hope that this initiative will set an example for local representatives to take active roles in protecting the underprivileged during harsh winter conditions.
