KATHALIA, February 23, (V7N) — A local farmer’s betel nut plantation was reportedly set on fire in Jhalakathi’s Kathalia upazila after he attempted to stop drug users from using his land as a hideout. The incident occurred in Chonauta village under the Amua union on Friday night, leading to a formal police complaint filed by the victim on Monday morning.

The victim, identified as Abdul Haque Bhuiyan, alleged that his plantation had become a frequent gathering spot for local drug users. According to the written complaint, a suspected drug dealer named Sujan Akon from the neighboring Patikhalghata village would regularly enter the farm to consume narcotics. When Bhuiyan confronted Sujan and his associates, prohibiting them from entering the property, the group reportedly became hostile.

The conflict escalated last Friday night when Sujan and his accomplices allegedly set the betel plantation ablaze in an act of retaliation. The fire caused significant damage to the crops, which serve as the primary source of livelihood for the farmer. Bhuiyan noted that the attack was a direct response to his "zero-tolerance" stance against drug activities on his private property.

Kathalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Naser Raihan confirmed the receipt of the written complaint on Monday. "We are currently investigating the matter and will take strict legal action against those involved in the arson," he stated. Local residents have expressed concern over the incident, calling for increased police patrols to curb the influence of drug dealers in rural neighborhoods.

The incident highlights the growing risks faced by rural citizens who challenge local drug networks. As the government continues its nationwide anti-drug campaign, community leaders in Kathalia are urging for better protection for those who report criminal activities. Meanwhile, the victimized farmer has sought compensation for his destroyed plantation.
