Rajshahi, April 27, (V7N) — Two significant events unfolded in Rajshahi on Sunday, reflecting both the city’s focus on infrastructure development and its commitment to intellectual and academic advancement. Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Administrator Md. Mahfuzur Rahman Riton issued strict instructions to engineers and contractors to expedite stalled road work, while Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) celebrated World Intellectual Property Day with a colorful rally and awareness programs.
Md. Mahfuzur Rahman Riton, Administrator of Rajshahi City Corporation, conducted an on-site inspection of the important road stretching from Barnali intersection to Hetem Khan Baro Mosque. The project, considered vital for easing traffic and improving connectivity in the metropolis, has faced delays. During his visit, Riton directed engineers and contractors to complete the work before the upcoming monsoon season.
“Honorable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s aim is to serve the people. We have embarked on that task. We want to complete the work on this road before the next monsoon season. Please do not lacksincerity,” Riton told officials, underscoring the urgency of the project.
The inspection began at the road behind Barnali intersection and continued through Hetemkhan Choto Mosque to Hetemkhan Baro Mosque intersection. Riton listened to grievances from local residents and instructed engineers to address drainage issues and other infrastructural concerns.
Superintending Engineer (Acting) Ahmed Al Moin Parag, Executive Engineer (Development) Md. Mahmudur Rahman Emon, contractors, and local dignitaries accompanied the administrator during the inspection. The directive reflects RCC’s broader push to accelerate stalled development projects across the city, ensuring smoother traffic flow and improved civic amenities
While city officials focused on infrastructure, Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) marked World Intellectual Property Day 2026 with a vibrant rally and awareness programs. The event aimed to highlight the importance of patents, trademarks, and copyrights in fostering innovation and protecting creative work.
The rally, led by Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Nurul Islam, began in front of the administrative building at 11 am and circled the main campus road. Faculty members, students, officers, and employees joined the procession, creating a festive atmosphere. The program was organized under the direction of IQAC Director Professor Dr. Imdadul Haque.
Prominent RUET officials including Professor Dr. Rabiul Islam Sarkar (Director of Student Welfare), Professor Dr. H. M. Russell (Director of Planning and Development), Professor Dr. Md. Mahmud Sajjad (Additional Director of IQAC), and Acting Registrar Arif Ahmed Chowdhury participated, alongside deans, department heads, and other academic leader.
World Intellectual Property Day is observed annually on April 26 to raise awareness about how intellectual property impacts daily life and contributes to social and economic development. The initiative was launched by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which was established on April 26, 1970. In October 1999, the United Nations General Assembly formally recognized the day, making April 26 a global occasion to celebrate creativity and innovation.
RUET has consistently observed the day, organizing events to educate teachers, students, and researchers about intellectual property rights. Professor Dr. Imdadul Haque noted: “RUET organizes various events every year to raise awareness among teachers, students, and researchers. The importance of intellectual property is highlighted to ensure protection and encourage innovation
The juxtaposition of RCC’s road inspection and RUET’s intellectual property celebration underscores Rajshahi’s dual priorities: physical infrastructure and intellectual advancement. On one hand, the city corporation is striving to complete essential road projects to improve urban mobility and drainage systems. On the other, RUET is fostering awareness about intellectual property, ensuring that future engineers and innovators understand the value of protecting their ideas.
Both initiatives reflect Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s broader vision of serving the people through development and modernization. Infrastructure projects enhance daily life by reducing congestion and improving safety, while intellectual property awareness strengthens the foundation for innovation-driven growth.
The road project faces challenges typical of urban development: delays, contractor accountability, and technical issues such as drainage. Riton’s directive to complete the work before monsoon season highlights the urgency of addressing these problems to prevent flooding and traffic disruptions.
Meanwhile, RUET’s celebration of Intellectual Property Day comes at a time when Bangladesh is increasingly focusing on research, innovation, and technology-driven industries. Raising awareness among students and faculty about patents and copyrights is crucial for integrating Bangladesh into the global knowledge economy.
Rajshahi’s developments on April 26 illustrate a city balancing immediate infrastructural needs with long-term intellectual growth. RCC Administrator Md. Mahfuzur Rahman Riton’s push to complete stalled road work reflects a commitment to civic improvement, while RUET’s celebration of World Intellectual Property Day highlights the importance of protecting creativity and innovation. Together, these efforts showcase Rajshahi’s role as both a hub of urban development and a center of academic excellence, aligning with national goals of progress and modernization.
