MONGLA, May 8 (V7N) — State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Lion Dr. Sheikh Faridul Islam, called for the immediate restoration of the country’s waterways, stating that dredging is now a mechanical necessity to sustain Bangladesh’s historic riverine civilization.
Speaking as the chief guest at an "environmental rally" held at the Chandpai Union Parishad premises in the Kainmari area of Mongla on Friday afternoon, the State Minister attributed the decline of the country's rivers to a combination of climate change and external factors.
The State Minister highlighted that the natural balance of the region is under severe threat.
Upstream Impact: He specifically noted that aggression from neighboring countries and the impact of the Farakka Barrage have restricted the natural flow of water from upstream.
Threat to Sundarbans: The lack of natural protection and freshwater flow is causing significant damage to the ecosystem, with many trees—including the iconic species of the Sundarbans—currently dying. "We are working tirelessly to protect nature from these compounding crises," he added.
Addressing local grievances, Dr. Sheikh Faridul Islam took a firm stance on the preservation of public water resources:
Pond Recovery: To resolve the acute drinking water crisis in the region, the Minister announced that all 52 government ponds in Mongla will be rescued from illegal occupation "at any cost."
Anti-Encroachment Warning: He issued a stern warning against influential individuals using government ponds for private fish cultivation. "A few people will not be allowed to harm hundreds of citizens for their own benefit. Strict action will be taken against anyone obstructing public access to water," he declared.
The rally was organized by Dharatree Raksha Amara (Dhara), Waterkeepers Bangladesh, and Pashur River Waterkeeper.
Sabuj Sathi Award: During the event, four individuals were honored with the "Sabuj Sathi Award" for their outstanding contributions to environmental conservation.
Green Initiative: The State Minister also inaugurated a month-long tree-planting program to bolster the region’s natural defenses.
The rally was presided over by Sharif Jamil, Central Member Secretary of Dhara and Coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh. Other notable speakers included Mongla Upazila Executive Officer Sharmin Akhter Sumi, Senior Assistant Police Superintendent Md. Refatul Islam, and various local political leaders.
