MONGLA, June 13, 2026 (V7N) – Coast Guard West Zone (Mongla) Zonal Commander Captain Mohammad Mesbaul Islam said in a press briefing on Friday that the Bangladesh Coast Guard is relentlessly performing its duties with utmost professionalism to ensure overall security of the Sundarbans, suppress forest piracy, preserve biodiversity, maintain security of Mongla Port, and prevent illegal activities in coastal areas. Two special operations named "Operation Restore Peace in Sundarbans" and "Operation Mangrove Shield" are being conducted to eliminate active forest bandits in the region.

Since February 12, Coast Guard forces have arrested 39 forest bandits along with 42 domestic and foreign firearms, 10 rounds of live ammunition, 250 rounds of live cartridges, and other equipment. A total of 41 people held hostage by bandits have been rescued alive, provided medical assistance, and safely handed over to their families. As a result of continuous operations, various bandit groups have been largely cornered, and on May 17, the head of the notorious bandit Chhota Sumon Bahini, Suman Howlader, surrendered to the Coast Guard with his associates.

The Coast Guard is also working intensively to ensure the security of Mongla Port, the country's second largest seaport. Regular patrols, round-the-clock surveillance of the port channel and waterways, and ensuring safety of ship movement on the Bangladesh-India Naval Protocol route keep the port active and secure. A conducive environment has been created to keep the country's foreign trade uninterrupted and maintain economic continuity.

At the same time, the Coast Guard is on the highest alert to prevent illegal push-ins in the country's maritime borders, coastal areas, and riverine border areas. Special operations are being conducted through regular patrols, intelligence surveillance, and monitoring through modern drones in coordination with other law enforcement agencies. The Coast Guard has established a station in the Joymonirghol area, long known as an important base for bandits, effectively blocking their supply of weapons and logistical support.

Regarding the June 11 attack on the Coast Guard station in Joymonirghol, the Zonal Commander stated that several Coast Guard members were injured, and necessary measures have been taken to bring the situation under control. A joint operation is underway to uncover the real cause and bring those involved under the law. The Coast Guard remains committed to ensuring the security of the Sundarbans, coastal areas, and maritime borders, and no propaganda or conspiracy will divert them from their duties.
