JHALOKATI, July 2, (V7N) – The Sikderhat–Bhandaria road in Kanthalia upazila has remained in a dilapidated state for years, causing severe hardship for nearly 20,000 residents who rely on it daily.
Stretching from Sikderhat Bridge in Chencharirampur Union No. 1 to the border of Bhandaria upazila, the road has become almost unusable due to prolonged neglect. Locals say carpeting has peeled off in many places, leaving large potholes that fill with water during rains, creating mud and waterlogging. Motorcycles, auto-rickshaws, and vans face risky conditions, and minor accidents are frequent.
The road is vital for students, teachers, patients, and traders, with a college, madrasa, secondary school, primary school, and a major market situated along its stretch. Suffering intensifies during the monsoon season, when commuting becomes especially hazardous.
Residents complain that despite repeated demands, no visible initiative has been taken by authorities. Journalist Mahfuz Gazi noted: “The Sikderhat–Bhandaria road is one of the main means of communication for the people here. Without urgent renovation, a major accident could happen at any time.”
Students have also voiced concerns, saying they risk their safety daily to reach schools and colleges.
In response, Kanthalia Upazila Engineer Md. Golam Mostafa explained that renovation has been delayed due to ID-related complications, but efforts are underway to resolve the issue. Once cleared, repair work will begin promptly.
Locals insist that urgent intervention is needed to restore this crucial road, ensuring safe communication and easing the daily suffering of thousands.
