DHAKA, July 2, 2026 (V7N): Emergency rehabilitation work has officially commenced on the heavily deteriorated Madhupur-Dewanganj road following a direct intervention by State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Choudhury. The crucial thoroughfare had fallen into severe disrepair, triggering intense public dissatisfaction and safety hazards for commuters in the region.

Upon learning of the road's condition, Choudhury—who serves as the local Member of Parliament (MP) for the Mymensingh-9 (Nandail) constituency—engaged directly with the leadership of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges. In response to his urgent requisition, the line ministry instructed senior engineers from both the Kishoreganj and Mymensingh Roads divisions to deploy maintenance teams and resources immediately to mitigate public suffering.

Phased Operational Strategy for Road Restoration

The Roads and Highways Department (RHD) is approaching the project with a dual-stage operational framework to stabilize the artery:

Immediate Emergency Remediation: RHD crews have quickly patched and backfilled the severely eroded bottlenecks, particularly sections that were completely washed away or hollowed out by heavy seasonal rainfall.

The Structural Challenge: Deputy Assistant Engineer of the Nandail Road Sub-Division, Md. Abdullah Al Kabir, noted that the initial repair zone faced fresh complications when unauthorized heavy freight vehicles drove over the fresh tarmac, causing secondary damage. Crews have adjusted their approach to handle the traffic load while working toward a durable fix.

Transition to Modern Standards: Kishoreganj Roads Department Executive Engineer Shakil Mohammad Faisal confirmed that a formal proposal has been submitted to the Planning Commission to extend the project's expired term. This administrative extension will allow the department to permanently reconstruct the highway to modern, high-load engineering standards rather than relying on temporary fixes.

Local Monitoring and Accountability Measures

Nandail Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Fatema Jannat confirmed that the sub-district administration is actively monitoring the construction site on a daily basis to ensure swift execution and high-quality standards. While the road falls under the jurisdiction of the RHD, local administrative officers are actively providing logistical support to help ease transport disruptions during the construction phase.

Contractual Accountability: State Minister Yasser Khan Choudhury emphasized that a formal investigation has been launched into the original construction firm. Despite the tender process being finalized several years ago, the contractor abruptly abandoned the site, causing years of artificial delays. Choudhury stated that strict punitive actions are being taken against the non-compliant firm, reiterating the new administration's absolute commitment to timely infrastructural accountability and public welfare.
