Dhaka, Mar 26 (V7N) -The nation is commemorating its 55th Independence Day on Wednesday, honouring the sacrifices that led to the birth of Bangladesh in 1971.
As a tradition, people from all walks of life gathered at the National Memorial in Savar to pay tribute to the martyrs who laid down their lives for the country’s liberation.
President Mohammed Sahabuddin was the first to arrive at the memorial at 5:43am on Wednesday. He placed a floral wreath at the main altar before leaving at 6:05am.
Shortly after, Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus arrived at 6:07am, paid his respects, and left by 6:15am.
Following their departure, the memorial was opened to the public, and thousands of people streamed in to pay their respects.
The premises soon became a sea of floral tributes, with people of all ages — children, young students, and the elderly — arriving in large numbers. Officials from various government, private, and educational institutions also joined in, carrying banners and festoons as they honoured the martyrs.
Among those paying tribute were wounded freedom fighters, many draped in the national flag. Families and individuals, despite fasting for Ramadan, made their way to the memorial early in the morning.
Saiful Islam, a resident of Dhamrai, brought his young daughter Maisha, who was seen enthusiastically chanting "Joy Bangla." "I wanted her to witness this historic day and understand its significance," he said.
Akram Hosen, a private sector employee from Savar, observed that attendance was slightly lower this year due to fasting. "Many of my colleagues travelled here from Dhaka after Sehri. It’s an emotional experience to offer flowers at the memorial together," he said.
Eva, a student of Gono Bishwabidyalay in Savar, had planned her visit well in advance. "It feels incredible to be here, paying tribute to the greatest sons of our nation," she said.
Mizanur Rahman, deputy assistant engineer of the Public Works Department at the National Memorial, said the site remained open throughout the day for visitors.
"The altar is gradually filling with flowers. To ensure smooth access for all, we are periodically removing older floral tributes," he added.
Security in and around the memorial has been tightened, with additional police personnel deployed to maintain order during the observance.
