May 24, (V7N) – Bangladesh Press Council (BPC) Chairman Justice A K M Abdul Hakim today emphasized that the freedom of the media and journalists must be balanced with their professional and social responsibilities. He stressed the critical need for journalists to deliver accurate and objective news to combat misinformation.
Justice Hakim delivered these remarks as the chief guest at a training workshop in Jashore, organized by the Press Council in collaboration with the Jashore District Administration.
The workshop, themed "Preventing Misreporting in the Media and Publishing Objective News," was chaired by Jashore Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md. Azaharul Islam. Other speakers included Press Council Secretary Md. Abdus Sabur, Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Noor-e-Alam Siddiqui, and Jashore Press Club President Zahid Hasan Tukun.
In his address, Justice Hakim criticized the "ideological profiteering" of the previous government, stating, "The spirit of the liberation war will definitely remain, but may Allah forgive us for what has been done with this spirit."
He also remarked that despite journalists having representation in all government institutions related to media, they had failed to act in the true interest of journalism and the press.
Justice Hakim urged all professionals, including journalists, to transcend the divisions of party politics. "If we cannot move out from these divisions, another 53 years will pass, and nothing will change," he warned.
