Dhaka, Mar 31 (V7N) – Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Mamun Ahmed, has proposed forming a ‘BIMSTEC Higher Education Network’ to facilitate smooth exchange of teachers, researchers and students among member countries.
He made the proposal while chairing a session at a seminar titled “Bridging Regions, Building Futures: BIMSTEC under the Spotlight” held at the University of Dhaka, organized jointly by the Department of International Relations and the BIMSTEC Secretariat.
Dr. Mamun said the proposed network would help introduce joint degree programmes, ensure easier credit transfers, and promote coordinated research among universities in BIMSTEC countries.
He noted that despite shared history and development challenges, universities in the region have long operated in isolation, stressing the need for stronger academic cooperation.
Highlighting global challenges such as geopolitical shifts, climate risks and economic changes, he emphasized the importance of connecting scholars and policymakers across the region, particularly in areas like digital connectivity, blue economy, STEM education and climate resilience.
He also described the Bay of Bengal as a key medium of regional connectivity and underscored the importance of human resource development in building a stable and prosperous region.
The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks from Md Abdul Mannan, with participants calling for stronger partnerships and practical initiatives in higher education.
