Kaptai, July 17 (V7N) — The authorities of the Karnaphuli Hydroelectric Power Station under the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) have begun preparations to release water through the spillway gates of Kaptai Dam as the water level in Kaptai Lake continues to rise following days of persistent rainfall.

An emergency notice has also been issued, urging residents of low-lying and vulnerable areas along the Karnaphuli River to remain on alert.

According to the emergency notice, signed by the Station Manager (Superintending Engineer) of the Karnaphuli Hydroelectric Power Station on Thursday night (July 16), the water level in Kaptai Lake reached 103.91 feet (MSL) as of 7:00 pm on July 16, 2026. The lake's maximum conservation level is 109 feet (MSL).

The notice said the lake's water level has been rising steadily due to continuous inflows from upstream. Considering the evolving situation, the authorities may begin releasing water through the spillway at any time after 10:00 am on Saturday (July 18) by opening two spillway gates by six inches.

If implemented, approximately 9,000 cusecs of water will be discharged through the spillway, while an additional 32,000 cusecs will flow through the station's five operational generating units for electricity production.

The power station authorities said rainfall, lake water levels and overall hydrological conditions are being monitored around the clock. Depending on the situation, the scheduled opening of the spillway gates may be advanced or delayed. They also warned that if inflows continue to increase, the gates may need to be opened further to release additional water.

The Karnaphuli Hydroelectric Power Station has advised residents living along the banks of the Karnaphuli River, boat operators, fishermen and all concerned to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant in view of the potential increase in river flow.
