Dhaka, Oct 13 (V7N) – State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam today sought Saudi Arabia's assistance in expediting the repatriation of the mortal remains of two Bangladeshi nationals killed in recent attacks there.

She made the request when Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Abdullah bin Zafer Abiyah paid a courtesy call on her at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here, according to a ministry press release.

The state minister also expressed appreciation for the treatment and care provided by Saudi authorities to Bangladeshi nationals injured in the attacks.

During the meeting, Shama conveyed Bangladesh's solidarity with the government and people of Saudi Arabia over the recent attacks and expressed condolences over the loss of lives. She stressed the importance of de-escalation and said dialogue and diplomacy should remain the preferred path for resolving tensions and restoring peace and stability.

The Saudi ambassador thanked Bangladesh for its solidarity and support during the difficult period. The meeting also reflected the close relations between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia, where a large number of Bangladeshi expatriates live and work.

The request comes after a string of deadly Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including strikes on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport that killed 18 people. Two Bangladeshi nationals were among those killed in the attacks. Saudi Arabia is a major destination for Bangladeshi expatriate workers, with over 2.5 million Bangladeshis living and working in the kingdom. The government has been working to ensure the safety and welfare of its citizens in the region amid the ongoing tensions.
