Rajshahi, Jan 05, (V7N) - In a violent political incident, Awami League leader Aliuzzaman Montu, widely known as "Montu Master," was tied to an electric pole and severely beaten by a group of locals in Puthia upazila, Rajshahi. The attack left him with serious injuries, including a fractured leg. He is currently receiving treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Montu Master, the president of Baneshwar Union Awami League and headmaster of Biraldaha Girls’ High School, is well-known in the region, where he has controversially been referred to as the "Education Minister" of Puthia due to his alleged role in recruitment-related corruption.
The incident occurred on Saturday (January 4) around 9:00 AM near the Biraldaha shrine. Witnesses stated that activists of the opposition BNP tied Montu to an electric pole and attacked him with iron rods. The brutal assault caused significant injuries to his legs and hands, leaving one leg fractured. Montu reportedly lost consciousness during the attack, after which the perpetrators fled the scene.
Medical Update
Locals promptly rescued Montu and rushed him to the Puthia Upazila Health Complex. Later, he was transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Doctors confirmed that his injuries are serious but not life-threatening.
Background and Allegations
Local residents accused Montu of being deeply involved in recruitment scandals under the guidance of Abdul Wadud Dara, the general secretary of Rajshahi district Awami League and a three-time Member of Parliament for the Rajshahi-5 constituency (Puthia-Durgapur). Montu allegedly demanded bribes for job placements and exercised substantial control over educational institutions in the area.
Montu had reportedly gone into hiding after the Awami League government stepped down on August 5. He returned home last Thursday and was attacked two days later.
Police Statement
Puthia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kabir Hossain stated, “We are aware of the incident but have not received any formal complaint yet. Once a complaint is filed, we will investigate and take the necessary steps.”
