Dhaka, Jan 16 (V7N)- The National Identity Registration Act, 2023 has officially been repealed, returning the National Identity (NID) registration process to the jurisdiction of the Election Commission (EC). This decision was disclosed by EC sources on Thursday (January 16).

Background

The Awami League government had introduced the National Identity Registration Act, 2023, transferring the NID process from the EC to the Security Services Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs. While the law authorized the shift, it included a provision allowing the NID process to remain with the EC until the transition was completed.

Public and Civil Society Pressure

Since the introduction of the Act, significant pressure from civil society, political advisors, and the general public urged the government to maintain the NID process under the EC. Critics argued that transferring the NID process could compromise its neutrality and efficiency.

Reversal Process

On Wednesday, a letter signed by Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed was sent to the Cabinet Secretary, formally recommending the repeal of the NID Act-2023. Following deliberations, the law was repealed on Thursday, re-establishing the EC's control over the NID registration process.

Significance of the Decision

The repeal aligns with demands for transparency and independence in the administration of national identity records, particularly in the lead-up to future elections. By reinstating the EC's authority over the NID process, stakeholders hope to ensure the impartial management of voter registration and related services.

Conclusion

This decision marks a victory for advocates of an independent Election Commission. The return of the NID process to the EC reaffirms its role in managing critical elements of the nation’s democratic framework.
