Dhaka, Feb 24 (V7N)- The electoral understanding between the National Citizens Party (NCP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami during the 13th National Parliament elections has now evolved into a broader political alliance, leaders from both sides say.

Despite internal criticism and the departure of several leaders — including women leaders — over the decision to join the Jamaat-led bloc, the 11-party alliance maintained unity and secured 77 parliamentary seats, strengthening its political footing.

Unity Continues Beyond Elections

NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain said the electoral cooperation between the two parties remains intact and continues to guide their political activities.

Leaders of the alliance noted that four of the 11 parties are now represented in parliament and plan to coordinate on key political issues both inside and outside the legislature.

Jamaat spokesperson and Assistant Secretary General Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair said the alliance deliberately avoided a traditional hierarchical structure.

Instead of appointing a convener, they described the arrangement as an “electoral unity,” with seat-sharing decisions reached through negotiations, he added.

Local Government Poll Strategy Yet to Be Finalized

On whether the alliance will contest upcoming local government elections jointly, leaders said no final decision has been taken.

Jamaat has already instructed its party units to prepare for the first phase — expected to begin with city corporation polls — while the NCP has formed its own committee to plan participation.

Akhtar Hossain said the party remains open to seat adjustments or broader understandings with Jamaat or other parties if deemed necessary in the larger political interest.

Position on Government Policies

Senior alliance leaders said they would support constructive initiatives by the BNP-led government but would oppose any measures they believe go against public interest.
