Feni, Sep 05 (V7N) - Hajera Begum, a resident of Jagatpur village in Darbarpur Union, Fulgazi Upazila, Feni, has been devastated by the recent flood. The floodwaters breached the road and completely destroyed her home. Since then, she has been enduring severe hardships with her children and elderly mother-in-law. Hajera Begum pleads, “I don’t ask for anything else, just repair my house.”

Feni has been severely affected by the flood, with Jagatpur village in Darbarpur Union being particularly hard hit. The flood from the Muhuri River has eroded 17 sections of a local road. Numerous houses have collapsed, crops have been ruined, and many domestic animals, including ducks and chickens, have perished.

Describing her traumatic experience during the flood, Hajera Begum said, “I have three children, two of whom are very young, and my elderly mother-in-law also lives with us. When the floodwaters came, we were in panic and had to climb onto the roof to stay safe. I can’t swim, so we used a boat to reach the school. My mother-in-law thought we had drowned and, in her despair, attempted to take her own life by drowning.”

Standing by her submerged home, Hajera Begum sorrowfully shared, “The river’s current has washed away the road next to my house, along with all my belongings. Our home and four other buildings have been destroyed. We have lost our goats, ducks, and chickens. With three children to care for and no means to repair the house, we are in a dire situation.”

Hajera and her husband, Omar Faruk, had worked hard through farming to build their life, but now they have lost everything and are left without a home.

Hajera Begum added, “We have no place to stay now. We don’t have a bed, chair, blanket, or pillow. How will we manage? What will I give my children? All their books and notebooks have been washed away. The children are staying with others. Please fix my house so we can have a place to live.”

Her neighbor, Marzina Akter, has also been severely affected by the flood. Her house, along with all her furniture and kitchen, has been washed away. Her husband, Nurul Amin, has fallen ill, and Marzina is now waiting for help while worrying about her three children’s future.

Marzina Begum said, “Everything, including our food supplies, has been carried away by the flood. We have lost everything. Our kitchen is destroyed, and we have nothing left. If you can help us, we might be able to survive. We are in desperate need.”

Like Hajera and Marzina, at least 50 families in Jagatpur village have lost everything in the flood. Despite the water receding, the residents are struggling to cope with the wreckage of their homes. Some are suffering from the shock, while others are left helplessly staring at the ruins. Without aid and rehabilitation, these families have no way to recover.

Shahadat from Jagatpur reported, “I lost two goats, all my ducks and chickens, and 20 mounds of rice. Only the pillars of the southern part of my house remain. We have no food and no money to buy anything.”

Feni District Commissioner Mouchammat Shahina Akter commented, “We have directed the relevant departments to assess the damage. A report will be prepared and sent to the Ministry of Disaster Management soon. Meanwhile, our relief efforts are ongoing. Rehabilitation work will begin once we receive instructions from the Ministry.”
