SYDNEY, Dec 29, (V7N) – Casper Ruud, the world number six, delivered a gritty performance at the United Cup on Sunday, defeating Tomas Machac in a marathon match. However, Norway ultimately fell to the Czech Republic after losing the decisive mixed doubles.

Ruud's 7-6 (7/6), 5-7, 6-4 victory at Ken Rosewall Arena took nearly three hours, leveling the tie 1-1 after Karolina Muchova's dominant 6-2, 6-2 win over Malene Helgo. Despite Ruud’s efforts, the Czech Republic clinched the tie with Machac and Muchova triumphing 6-4, 6-4 in mixed doubles against Norway’s Viktor Durasovic and Ulrikke Eikeri.

Ruud faced a stiff challenge from Machac, who is ranked 25th in the world. After saving nine break points and requiring treatment on his left quad, Ruud managed to secure the victory in the third set.

"You kind of hope that it won't be that tough, but what a way to start the new season," said Ruud. "If every match is going to be this tough, it's going to be a long season."

The Norwegian star, who captured titles in Geneva and Barcelona in 2024, will look to improve as the tournament progresses, though concerns about his physical condition may linger.

World number 22 Karolina Muchova, a 2023 French Open finalist, was clinical in her match against Helgo, breaking serve four times in a 77-minute win.

"It's the first match of the next year, and you never know how you'll come out and how you're going to feel," said Muchova. "I'm very happy to have won in two."

Helgo’s search for her first United Cup victory continues, extending her winless streak to 0-6 since the tournament’s inaugural edition in 2023.

The 18-nation mixed-team event features three men and three women per team, with ties comprising men’s and women’s singles matches, followed by a potentially decisive mixed doubles clash.

Other key matches include Switzerland facing Italy in Sydney’s evening tie, while defending champions Germany, led by Alexander Zverev, take on Brazil in Perth. The Coco Gauff-led United States team, winners in 2023, are set to face Canada later in Perth.

The United Cup is shaping up as a thrilling start to the 2025 tennis season, with top players and rising stars showcasing their skills in a unique format.
