Dhaka, Feb 07 (V7N) – Fortune Barisal secured their second consecutive Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) title after a nail-biting 3-wicket victory over the Chittagong Kings in the final. The defending champions achieved a record-breaking run chase to clinch the title in a dramatic finish.
Chittagong Sets a Competitive Target
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Chittagong Kings posted a formidable total of 194 for 3. Parvez Hossain Emon anchored the innings with a brilliant 78 run* knock, while Khawaja Nafer contributed a solid 66. Their partnership provided a strong foundation, with Graham Clarke adding a quickfire 44 to propel Chittagong to a challenging score.
Tamim Iqbal Leads Barisal’s Charge
In response, Tamim Iqbal gave Fortune Barisal a blazing start, scoring a fifty off just 24 balls. His aggressive batting set the tone, but once Tamim was dismissed for 54 runs, Barisal found themselves under pressure.
Kyle Myers and Mahmudullah Revive the Innings
Barisal’s hopes were reignited by Caribbean star Kyle Myers, who kept the scoreboard ticking with a composed 46 that included three fours and three sixes. With 25 runs needed off the last 3 overs and six wickets in hand, Barisal appeared to be cruising towards victory with Myers and Mahmudullah Riyad at the crease.
Shariful Islam’s Game-Changing Over
However, the match took a dramatic turn in the 18th over when Shariful Islam dismissed both Kyle Myers and Mahmudullah within the span of five runs, swinging the momentum back in Chittagong’s favor. The pressure intensified as Rishad was dismissed in the 19th over, leaving Barisal needing 8 runs from the final over.
Dramatic Final Over Seals Victory
In a tense final over, Hussain Talat delivered the first ball, which Rishad dispatched for a six, bringing Barisal within touching distance of victory. A single on the next ball leveled the scores. Although Tanvir Islam managed a dot ball to heighten the suspense, a wide ball from Talat sealed Barisal’s thrilling win.
Record-Breaking Victory and Heartbreak for Chittagong
Barisal’s successful chase of 194 marks the highest run chase in BPL history to secure the championship. This victory solidifies Fortune Barisal’s dominance in the league, while the Chittagong Kings' dream of clinching their first title since their 2013 final loss to Dhaka Gladiators remains unfulfilled.
