February 26 (V7N) — The San Francisco 49ers have promoted Mick Lombardi to quarterbacks coach, replacing Brian Griese, the team announced Tuesday while confirming a new set of coordinators.
It remains unclear whether Griese was let go or left voluntarily. He had served as the 49ers' quarterbacks coach for three seasons and was recently sought for a head-coaching interview with the New York Jets, which he declined.
Lombardi, 36, returns to the 49ers coaching staff for his second stint, having previously worked in various roles from 2013-16. After serving as the Las Vegas Raiders' offensive coordinator (2022-23), he rejoined San Francisco in 2024 as a senior offensive assistant.
The shift in quarterbacks coaching comes as the 49ers plan to sign Brock Purdy to a long-term deal this offseason.
In addition to Lombardi’s promotion, the 49ers formalized Klay Kubiak’s role as offensive coordinator, a position initially announced in January. The job had been vacant for the past two seasons, though head coach Kyle Shanahan will continue to call plays.
Kubiak has been with the 49ers since 2021, working in assistant roles on both offense and defense. Last season, he served as an offensive passing game specialist.
On the defensive side, Robert Saleh returns as defensive coordinator after being fired as head coach of the New York Jets in October. Brant Boyer also joins San Francisco as special teams coordinator.
The coaching moves come as San Francisco looks to build on its NFC Championship-winning season and prepare for another Super Bowl run in 2025.
