Xigaze, Tibet, Jan 07 (V7N)— A devastating earthquake struck Tibet on Tuesday morning, leaving 95 people dead and at least 130 seriously injured, according to reports from the BBC. The earthquake, which occurred at 9 a.m. local time, has caused widespread destruction in the region.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the earthquake's magnitude at 7.1, with its epicenter located 10 kilometers below the surface near Xigaze, Tibet's second-largest city. Chinese state media, however, reported the quake's magnitude as 6.8. Tremors were also felt in neighboring Nepal and India.
The earthquake has led to the destruction of more than a thousand homes, with entire villages plunged into darkness due to power outages. Rescue teams are working tirelessly amidst the rubble to save survivors, but challenging conditions are hampering efforts.
A state of emergency has been declared in the region, and Chinese authorities have mobilized additional resources for rescue and relief operations. The affected areas are experiencing significant aftershocks, adding to the fear and difficulty faced by residents and rescue workers.
This disaster highlights the vulnerability of the Tibetan plateau, which lies in a seismically active zone. As rescue operations continue, the death toll is feared to rise further.
