Liverpool, Sep 10 (V7N)- Liverpool began their 2026–27 UEFA Champions League campaign with a hard-fought 2–1 comeback victory over Spanish giants Atlético Madrid at Anfield.

The Reds were stunned early when Atlético midfielder Marcos Llorente silenced the home crowd in the 17th minute with a superb finish to put the visitors ahead.

Liverpool responded with relentless pressure and were rewarded just before halftime. In the 40th minute, Dominik Szoboszlai produced a brilliant finish to restore parity and send the two sides into the break level at 1–1.

Arne Slot’s side returned from the interval with renewed intensity and completed the turnaround just five minutes into the second half.

Alexis Mac Allister collected the ball outside the penalty area in the 50th minute before unleashing a thunderous long-range strike. The Argentine midfielder’s effort flew beyond the goalkeeper’s reach and into the back of the net, giving Liverpool a 2–1 lead.

Mac Allister immediately raced toward the corner to celebrate with the Anfield faithful. His emotional celebration came just a day after frustration surrounding his contract situation had dominated attention, turning the mood into one of pure delight.

Atlético pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages, but Liverpool held firm to protect their advantage.

The final whistle confirmed a memorable 2–1 victory for Slot’s men, giving Liverpool a winning start to their European campaign and another unforgettable night under the lights at Anfield.
