Lhasa, Jan 08, (V7N) - The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Tibet has risen to 126, with authorities continuing their efforts to locate survivors in the affected areas. The earthquake, which hit on Monday, registered a magnitude of 6.9 and caused widespread damage in several regions, including the capital, Lhasa.
Rescue operations are ongoing as emergency responders and military personnel search through debris to find survivors. Thousands of homes, as well as key infrastructure such as roads and bridges, have been damaged or destroyed.
Local hospitals are overwhelmed with the injured, and medical teams are being dispatched to provide aid. Authorities have issued warnings about aftershocks and have advised residents to stay alert.
Tibet’s government has declared a state of emergency and set up relief camps to provide shelter, food, and medical care to those displaced by the disaster. The region's challenging terrain has made it difficult for rescuers to reach some of the hardest-hit areas, and there are concerns that the death toll could continue to rise.
International aid organizations have pledged support, and rescue teams from neighboring regions have also been sent to assist.
The earthquake, which struck at dawn, also caused significant disruption to local power and communication lines, hampering efforts to assess the full extent of the damage.
Tibetan officials are urging citizens to remain calm and follow safety protocols while recovery efforts continue.
