Seoul, Jan 03, (V7N) - On January 3, South Korean authorities attempted to execute an unprecedented arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol, leading to a confrontation with his presidential security forces. Investigators from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), along with police and prosecutors, arrived at Yoon's compound at around 7 a.m. Despite initial obstacles, including a bus blocking the driveway, officials managed to enter the premises but were met with resistance from the Presidential Security Service (PSS), which had previously blocked investigators' access to Yoon's office and residence.

Yoon is under criminal investigation for insurrection related to his controversial declaration of martial law on December 3, 2024. The move stunned the country, leading to a swift rebuke from lawmakers who voted against the order. After rescinding the martial law declaration, Yoon defended his actions, claiming they were necessary to counter political deadlock and alleged anti-state forces. His actions sparked widespread protests and legal challenges.

The current arrest warrant is valid until January 6, giving authorities 48 hours to detain Yoon. Once arrested, he would be held at the Seoul Detention Center, though his legal team has argued that the warrant is unlawful, citing the CIO's lack of authority. Yoon's impeachment case is also ongoing, with the Constitutional Court set to review his suspension and possible removal.
