MANILA, March 14, (V7N) – The arrest and transfer of former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte to the International Criminal Court (ICC) this week have drawn strong reactions from his longtime critics. Duterte faces crimes against humanity charges for his controversial drug war, which human rights groups claim killed tens of thousands.
Among those responding to the arrest is Father Flaviano Villanueva, a priest who has supported the families of victims. He called the development "a manifestation of Duterte paying for his sins", emphasizing that justice should extend beyond Duterte to all those involved in the killings.
Leila de Lima, a former senator who was jailed for six years on drug charges she claims were politically motivated, expressed mixed emotions. While she welcomed the arrest, she noted that justice was only possible through an international tribunal and urged local authorities to prosecute other perpetrators.
Forensic pathologist Raquel Fortun, who has investigated drug war deaths despite threats, said she felt some relief but remains committed to her work, exhuming bodies and assisting victims' families. She emphasized the importance of truth and accountability in the case.
Meanwhile, former senator Antonio Trillanes, who led efforts to bring Duterte before the ICC, called the arrest "a strong message to future leaders" about the consequences of abusing power. However, he warned that not all Filipinos welcome this development, and potential political instability remains a concern.
