LONDON, March 17, (V7N) – UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have taken the lead in shaping Europe’s response to the Ukraine war, strengthening ties as they push for a ceasefire agreement amid US President Donald Trump’s unpredictable foreign policy.

Since taking office in July 2024, Starmer has prioritized rebuilding the UK’s relationship with European allies, particularly with France. His close ties with Macron have proven invaluable as they work together to ensure Ukraine’s security while navigating Trump’s negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The two leaders have launched a "coalition of the willing," urging European nations to commit troops or logistical support to uphold any ceasefire. They are also acting as key intermediaries between Ukraine and the Trump administration, with high-level diplomatic meetings taking place in Poland and Washington in recent weeks.

Despite this unity, Brexit-related tensions remain, particularly over fishing rights and trade regulations. Additionally, France remains wary of the UK's close historical ties with the US, fearing that Britain could ultimately prioritize its relationship with Washington over European cooperation.

Still, analysts agree that UK-France relations are the strongest in years, with their coordinated approach seen as crucial in countering Russian aggression and maintaining European security in the face of Trump’s shifting policies.
