Milo, Apr 11 (V7N) – At least 30 people are feared dead following a stampede at the historic Citadel Laferie tourist site in northern Haiti, officials said on Saturday.
The incident occurred during Easter celebrations at the popular site in the city of Milo, according to Jean-Henri Petit, head of civil protection for Haiti’s Nord department. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.
Prime Minister Alex Didier Fils-Amy expressed deep condolences, saying the tragedy took place during a tourist event attended by many young people. He confirmed that an investigation has been launched and emergency services have been deployed to assist victims.
The site, Citadelle Laferrière, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built after Haiti’s independence from France by revolutionary leader Henri Christophe.
Officials are still assessing the full scale of casualties as recovery efforts continue.
