London, Jul 09 (V7N)- Denmark's capital Copenhagen has been ranked the world's most livable city in the Global Liveability Index 2026, according to the latest assessment by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the research and analysis division of The Economist Group.
The annual index evaluated 173 cities worldwide based on factors including stability, healthcare, education, infrastructure, culture and environment, measuring the overall quality of urban life.
Copenhagen Retains Top Spot
Copenhagen secured the No. 1 position for the second consecutive year after also leading the rankings in 2025.
The Danish capital was recognized for its efficient public transportation, extensive cycling infrastructure, low traffic congestion, clean environment and high standard of public services. With fewer private vehicles on the roads, residents enjoy smoother commuting, lower pollution levels and a healthier urban lifestyle.
Vienna Remains Second
Austria's capital Vienna, which topped the rankings for three consecutive years before being overtaken by Copenhagen in 2025, retained second place in the 2026 index.
The city received top marks for healthcare and education while also being praised for its reliable public utilities, safe neighborhoods, efficient transportation system and well-planned urban development. Vienna's vibrant public spaces and historic markets continue to make it one of Europe's most attractive cities.
Melbourne and Sydney Continue Strong Performance
Australia's Melbourne ranked third, earning recognition for its rich cultural life, world-class educational institutions, arts scene and thoughtfully planned urban environment.
The city is renowned for its museums, galleries, music, fashion and sporting culture, with landmarks such as the State Library Victoria, Hosier Lane, and the National Gallery of Victoria among its major attractions.
Fellow Australian city Sydney claimed fourth place, benefiting from its combination of modern urban infrastructure and abundant natural beauty. Access to beaches, parks and outdoor recreational spaces has played a significant role in maintaining the city's high quality of life.
Zurich Completes Top Five
Switzerland's financial hub Zurich ranked fifth, reflecting its strong economy, advanced banking sector, technological innovation and exceptional public services.
The city is also known for its scenic lakes, clean environment, efficient public transport and consistently high standard of living, making it one of the most desirable places to live in the world.
The EIU's Global Liveability Index is widely regarded as one of the leading international benchmarks for measuring urban quality of life and is used by governments, businesses and researchers to assess living conditions across major cities worldwide.
