Washington, Sept 29 (V7N) – Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev met with US officials in Washington on Monday for talks about future US-Russia energy projects after Moscow's war against Ukraine, a US government official told AFP.
Dmitriev and US officials held "constructive discussions on a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and possible US-Russia energy initiatives after the war ends," the official said Tuesday. "The visit follows Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner's recent meeting with President Putin in Moscow and their discussions last week with Ukrainian officials in NYC," said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
The latest talks came amid intensified daytime Russian strikes on Kyiv using jet-powered drones that Ukrainian forces are struggling to intercept. More than four and a half years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and despite the resumption of talks with US mediators, a diplomatic settlement to Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II remains elusive.
The meeting marks a continuation of behind-the-scenes diplomatic engagement between Washington and Moscow, even as the conflict continues. The Trump administration has been pursuing a dual-track approach of maintaining pressure on Russia through sanctions while exploring avenues for a negotiated settlement. The discussions on post-war energy initiatives suggest that both sides are looking beyond the current conflict to potential areas of cooperation, particularly in the energy sector, which has been significantly disrupted by the war and the broader Middle East crisis.
