Riyadh, June 16, 2024 — In a demonstration of stringent measures to regulate the Hajj pilgrimage, Saudi Arabia has turned back more than 250,000 individuals attempting to perform Hajj with travel visas. The move underscores the kingdom's commitment to preventing unauthorized pilgrims and ensuring compliance with Hajj regulations.
Colonel Talal Al Shalhoub, a spokesman for the Saudi Ministry of Interior, announced that 256,481 people were intercepted and sent back for attempting Hajj with visit visas this year, according to Gulf News. The Saudi authorities have emphasized that only those with the appropriate Hajj permits are allowed to participate in the pilgrimage.
Since April 29, the authorities have detected and dismantled 160 fraudulent Hajj campaigns and turned away 135,098 unauthorized vehicles from entering Mecca. Additionally, 250,381 non-residents have been barred from entering Islam's holiest city.
Colonel Al Shalhoub reiterated that any slogans unrelated to Islamic Sharia will not be tolerated at the holy sites where Hajj ceremonies are held. Saudi security agencies will maintain tight security around these sites until the end of the Hajj season.
The Saudi Ministry of Interior has promised severe penalties for those violating Hajj rules in Mecca, the central areas, and other holy places between June 2 and June 20. A fine of 10,000 Saudi Riyals (approximately 3,12,000 BDT) will be imposed on those caught performing Hajj without permission.
Violators, whether Saudi citizens or foreign nationals, face strict consequences. Expatriates caught without proper Hajj authorization will be deported and barred from re-entering Saudi Arabia. Repeat offenders will face doubled fines.
Furthermore, individuals involved in transporting illegal Hajj pilgrims can be jailed for up to six months and fined up to 50,000 Riyals (more than 15 lakhs BDT). Expatriate transporters will be deported upon completing their sentences and will be permanently ineligible to re-enter the kingdom.
These measures highlight Saudi Arabia's dedication to maintaining order and safety during the Hajj season, ensuring that the pilgrimage proceeds smoothly and securely for all authorized participants.
