Kallakurchi, 20 June 2024 – At least 34 people have died after consuming poisonous liquor in the Kallakurchi district of Tamil Nadu. The incident has left more than one hundred people hospitalized, with several in critical condition, as confirmed by the local administration on Thursday (June 20). According to authorities, 60 individuals remain ill and are receiving treatment in various hospitals. Hundreds were admitted by Wednesday with symptoms including vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, all traced back to the consumption of toxic, brewed liquor.

In response to the incident, the Deputy Commissioner of Kallakurchi has been transferred for negligence. Additionally, at least 19 officials, including the District Superintendent of Police, have been dismissed from their duties. Law enforcement has arrested four individuals responsible for selling the illegal liquor. Authorities also seized 200 liters of alcohol laced with methanol.

Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister, MK Stalin, has ordered an inquiry into the incident. Expressing his shock and sadness on social media platform X, he stated, "I am shocked and saddened to hear the news of the deaths of people after consuming poisonous liquor. Those involved in this incident have been arrested. Action has also been taken against officials."

This tragedy highlights the ongoing issue of illegal liquor sales in the region. The swift action by the administration aims to bring justice and prevent future occurrences. However, the community is left mourning the loss of lives due to this preventable disaster.
