Oct 06,V7N-Inter Miami remains on track for a historic season in Major League Soccer (MLS) after Leonardo Campana’s stoppage-time goal secured a 1-0 victory over Toronto. With all of Miami’s top stars, including Lionel Messi, starting on the bench, the Argentine was introduced in the 61st minute to the delight of the crowd. The game had little action until the late winner, set up by a Luis Suárez cross which Campana controlled on his thigh before volleying the ball into the net. It was only Miami’s second shot on target in the match.

This win leaves Inter Miami on 71 points, just two shy of the MLS record of 73 points in a single season set by the New England Revolution in 2021. Miami, having already secured the Supporters' Shield for the best regular season record, now looks to break that points record in their final game at home against New England on October 19. Midfielder Julian Gressel acknowledged that setting a new points record is a key motivation for the team.

Meanwhile, Toronto’s hopes of making the postseason were dashed later in the day after D.C. United beat New England 2-1. Christian Benteke, MLS's leading scorer, netted his 23rd goal of the season to help D.C. secure a vital win that keeps them in 8th place, in a wildcard playoff spot, level on points with Montreal and three ahead of Philadelphia.

Philadelphia fell to a 3-2 defeat against defending champions Columbus Crew, who secured second place in the Eastern Conference behind Miami. Colombian striker Cucho Hernández scored twice for Columbus, leaving Philadelphia’s playoff hopes hanging by a thread. Atlanta United, meanwhile, kept their slim playoff chances alive with a 2-1 win over New York Red Bulls.

In the Western Conference, eight of the nine playoff spots have already been secured, with the final wildcard spot being contested between Austin and Portland. Austin was scheduled to play LA Galaxy, while Portland hosts Dallas in a critical Sunday match.
