The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made a significant announcement when they announced that Rohit Sharma would captain India in the Twenty20 World Cup, which will be held later this year in the United States and the West Indies.
This decision comes after Rohit's strong leadership despite India's heartbreak in the 2023 World Cup final, where they lost to Australia after an impressive 10-match winning streak. Addressing this at the Rajkot stadium renaming ceremony, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah expressed confidence in Rohit, stating, "We won hearts even though we didn't win the World Cup. I assure you we will lift the trophy in 2024 under Rohit's leadership."
This marks Rohit's return to the T20 captaincy after a brief hiatus. He previously led India to the 2021 edition of the tournament, reaching the Super 12 stage. With his proven track record and experience, Rohit's appointment has generated much excitement among Indian cricket fans, hoping to end their global trophy drought since the 2013 Champions Trophy.
Furthermore, the Rajkot stadium where the announcement was made was renamed after Niranjan Shah, a former BCCI secretary, prior to the third Test against England starting today.
