Hamilton, New Zealand DEC, 09, (V7N) – New Zealand cricket confirmed Monday that opener Devon Conway will miss the third Test against England as he awaits the birth of his first child. This paves the way for the potential return of experienced batter Will Young, who was controversially left out of the first two matches in the series.

Conway, 33, has been out of touch throughout the England series, managing just 21 runs across four innings with scores of 2, 8, 11, and 0. Notably, he hasn’t scored a Test century in nearly two years, a decline in form that has coincided with New Zealand’s struggles in the series.

With England leading the three-match series 2-0 following their dominant 323-run win in Wellington, Conway’s absence offers New Zealand an opportunity to rethink their opening combination for the final Test in Hamilton, starting Saturday.

The out-of-favor Will Young, 32, is expected to be promoted to the starting XI. Known for his consistency, Young was a key performer during New Zealand's 3-0 sweep of India late last year. He scored 244 runs at an impressive average just under 50, batting at number three. However, Young was dropped to make way for the return of Kane Williamson, who missed the India series due to injury.

Despite having batted predominantly at number three during his career, Young has vast experience as an opener, making him a natural replacement for Conway. His composure at the top of the order could provide stability as New Zealand seeks to salvage some pride in the series finale.

In Conway’s absence, middle-order batter Mark Chapman has been added to the squad. Chapman, a versatile player across all formats, will provide depth to the lineup but is unlikely to feature in the playing XI with Young set to slot in.

England has dominated the series so far, with their aggressive “Bazball” approach leaving New Zealand struggling to keep up. The visitors secured convincing victories in both Mount Maunganui and Wellington, showcasing their batting depth and relentless bowling attack.

With the series already decided, the third Test will be a chance for England to push for a clean sweep, while New Zealand will aim to find solutions to their top-order issues and reclaim some momentum.
