BRISBANE – Dec. 15, (V7N ) - Australia's batting stalwarts Steve Smith and Travis Head delivered commanding performances on the second day of the third Test against India at the Gabba, each bringing up crucial centuries to steer the hosts into a strong position.

Smith Ends Century Drought

Steve Smith reached his first Test century in 18 months, marking his 33rd career milestone in the longest format. After struggling in the early stages of his innings, Smith found his rhythm after passing 50 and pushed on to reach the landmark in the evening session.

His last Test century came against England at Lord's in June 2023. With this feat, Smith surpassed Steve Waugh on Australia’s all-time century list, moving into second place behind Ricky Ponting, who holds the record with 41 centuries.

Smith’s determined knock underlined his class and experience, steadying Australia after a wobbly start.

Head's Explosive Form Continues

Travis Head, in contrast, played with aggressive intent, smashing a blistering century off just 115 balls. Walking in at a precarious 75-3, Head took the attack to the Indian bowlers, hammering 13 boundaries to reach his ninth Test ton.

This innings followed his stunning 140 in the second Test in Adelaide, showcasing his rich vein of form. Head’s counter-attacking approach helped swing the momentum firmly in Australia’s favor.

India's Bowling Struggles

India’s bowlers started the day with promise, reducing Australia to 75-3 before lunch. However, Smith and Head combined for a decisive partnership that blunted the Indian attack. Despite moments of brilliance, the visitors struggled to maintain consistency and capitalize on early breakthroughs.

Looking Ahead

With Smith anchoring and Head providing fireworks, Australia looks set for a commanding first-innings total. India will need a strong response with the bat to stay in contention in this pivotal Test match.
