Dec 17, V7N - Former England assistant Steve Holland has been named manager of Japanese club Yokohama F-Marinos, stepping into his first head coaching role since leaving Gareth Southgate's England staff after their Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.

Holland, 54, follows high-profile predecessors Ange Postecoglou and Harry Kewell at the five-time J. League champions. He takes over a team that finished ninth in the league this season and were Asian Champions League finalists last year.

A Bold Vision for Success

In a statement, Holland called Yokohama “a prestigious club” and pledged to bring an exciting brand of football.

> “Our mission is to compete for titles again, and we will pursue playing aggressive, attacking football. I aim to build a team that consistently competes at the highest level, defined by strong competitiveness and unity.”

From England Glory to J. League Challenge

Holland was Gareth Southgate's trusted deputy for eight years, helping England reach two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final.

Before his England tenure, Holland spent eight years at Chelsea, working under several managers.

His only prior managerial stint was at Crewe Alexandra (2007–2008).

Despite limited head coaching experience, Holland brings elite tactical expertise to a club deeply connected to the City Football Group, the global network of clubs led by Manchester City.

J. League Ambitions

Calling the J. League “the best league in Asia,” Holland said it was a privilege to manage in front of Yokohama’s passionate fans.

> “The enthusiasm and passion of the supporters create a fantastic atmosphere.”

The Road Ahead for Yokohama

Yokohama F-Marinos began the season under Harry Kewell but dismissed him midway, handing interim duties to John Hutchinson. Holland now takes charge with clear goals: revitalizing the squad and reclaiming their place among the J. League’s elite.

With a focus on attacking football and a proven history of building competitive teams, Holland’s appointment signals Yokohama’s intent to challenge for silverware once again.
