James Rodriguez turned back the clock with a vintage display to lead Colombia to a 2-1 victory over Paraguay in their opening Copa America match in Houston.

The 32-year-old midfielder, whose club career has seen ups and downs since his standout performance at the 2014 World Cup, orchestrated both of Colombia's goals at the NRG Stadium.

Rodriguez's first contribution came in the 32nd minute when he delivered a precise cross from the left flank to Daniel Munoz, who headed home to give Colombia a 1-0 lead.

Ten minutes later, Rodriguez was at it again, this time from a free-kick on the opposite side. His delivery found Jefferson Lerma, whose glancing header doubled Colombia's advantage before halftime.

Despite a goal from Paraguay's Julio Enciso in the 69th minute that made it 2-1, Colombia maintained control of the game and created several scoring opportunities.

Rodriguez almost earned Colombia a penalty late in the game after a VAR review initially awarded one, only for the decision to be overturned.

With this victory, Colombia extended their unbeaten streak to 24 games and will next face Costa Rica on Friday before concluding their group stage against Brazil on July 2.

Meanwhile, Brazil begins their Copa America campaign against Costa Rica later on Monday in Inglewood, California.
