Dhaka, June 11 (V7N)– Health authorities in Bangladesh today reported a significant surge in dengue fever cases, with 288 new patients hospitalized across the country in the past 24 hours – the highest single-day count so far this year.

According to a press release from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the Barishal division bore the brunt of the new infections, accounting for 261 of the hospitalized patients. Other affected areas included Chattogram (11 cases), Dhaka division (1 case), Dhaka South (12 cases), Rajshahi (1 case), and Mymensingh (2 cases).

The latest figures push the total number of dengue cases recorded in Bangladesh this year to 5,303. The death toll from the mosquito-borne disease has also risen to 23.

Despite the rise in new admissions, 268 dengue patients were discharged from various hospitals in the last 24 hours. So far, a total of 4,832 dengue patients have recovered and been released nationwide.

The current outbreak, while concerning, is still below the scale of last year's severe epidemic, which saw 101,214 cases and 575 deaths, the DGHS statement added. Health officials are urging heightened vigilance and preventative measures to curb the spread of the disease.
