Las Vegas, Jan 03, (V7N) - Authorities are working to piece together the events leading up to the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck in Las Vegas on New Year's Day. The person believed to have been driving the truck is Matthew Livelsberger, 37, who rented the vehicle in Colorado and drove it to Las Vegas. The person found dead in the vehicle after the explosion was badly burned, and while authorities can't fully confirm it was Livelsberger, they have enough evidence to believe he was the driver.
The explosion occurred Wednesday morning, just before 9 a.m., outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. It’s believed that Livelsberger shot himself in the head just before the vehicle detonated, according to Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
The explosion does not appear to be linked to a deadly attack in New Orleans earlier that day, and authorities are still unsure of Livelsberger’s motive.
Here is what authorities know about Livelsberger's movements and the Cybertruck leading up to the explosion:
Dec. 28: Livelsberger rents the Cybertruck in Denver through the Turo car rental service.
Dec. 30: The Cybertruck is charged in Monument, Colorado. That same day, Livelsberger buys two semi-automatic handguns legally.
Dec. 31: The Cybertruck is charged at four locations across New Mexico—Trinidad, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, and Gallup.
Jan. 1: The truck is charged in Holbrook, Flagstaff, and Kingman, Arizona. The last charge occurs at 5:33 a.m. in Kingman, about 100 miles from Las Vegas.
By early Jan. 1, the Cybertruck was in Las Vegas.
7:29 a.m.: The Cybertruck is first seen in Las Vegas.
7:34 a.m.: It turns onto Fashion Show Drive, near the Trump International Hotel.
Between 7:34 a.m. and 8:35 a.m.: The truck passes through the hotel's valet and spends nearly 45 minutes in a parking lot near Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road.
8:35 a.m.: The truck is seen pulling onto Las Vegas Boulevard from Sands Avenue.
8:39 a.m.: The Cybertruck returns to the hotel valet. Within 17 seconds, the truck explodes. Livelsberger is believed to have shot himself just before the explosion.
The explosion killed Livelsberger and injured seven others. Authorities are still investigating the details.
