Beijing, Jan 4, (V7N) – A devastating fire broke out at the Liguang market in Zhangjiakou city, northern China, on Saturday, claiming the lives of at least eight people and injuring 15 others, according to state media reports.

The blaze began around midday in the Qiaoxi District market, known for its bustling crowds and lower-priced goods. Firefighters brought the situation under control by 2:00 p.m. (0600 GMT), the Xinhua News Agency reported.

CAUSE UNDER INVESTIGATION

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. Traditional markets like Liguang often face significant fire risks due to the presence of gas cylinders, charcoal for cooking, and aging infrastructure. Discarded cigarettes have also been identified as potential fire triggers in such environments.

MARKET FIRE RISKS HIGHLIGHTED

The incident brings renewed attention to fire safety concerns in traditional markets across China, which attract large numbers of shoppers but often lack modern safety standards.

Zhangjiakou, situated in Hebei province near Beijing, gained international attention as a host city for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. Despite its global exposure, the city’s traditional markets continue to grapple with safety challenges.

Emergency response teams remain on site, and the injured are being treated in local hospitals. Updates on the investigation areexpected soon.
