WASHINGTON,D.C, March 28, (V7N) – US President Donald Trump described his first phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as "extremely productive," despite ongoing tensions between the two nations over trade and recent controversial statements from Trump.

During the call on Friday, Trump praised the conversation, emphasizing their agreement on several issues and announced plans to meet soon after Canada’s general election on April 28. "We agree on many things," Trump said via his Truth Social platform, adding that the meeting would cover politics, business, and other areas to benefit both countries.

The upbeat tone marked a stark contrast to the recent rhetoric between Washington and Ottawa. Just days earlier, Prime Minister Carney had declared that the long-standing deep economic and military ties between the two nations were "over." Carney also vowed to retaliate against Trump’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on vehicle imports, which is set to take effect next week. This move could severely impact Canada’s auto industry, which employs approximately 500,000 people.

In addition, Carney had indicated he would not engage in trade talks with the US until Trump ends his repeated threats to annex Canada. Trump has suggested since his return to power that Canada should become the 51st US state, adding to the strained relations. Despite these tensions, the call indicated some willingness to ease the rift, with both leaders planning to work towards a more cooperative future.
